Approximately 9 MGD of recycled water is used at about 36 different sites. All of the recycled water produced at the plant is used by the Water Replenishment District of Southern California for recharging the Central Basin aquifer and for landscape irrigation by the Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District.

The Whittier Narrows WRP occupies 27 acres south of the Pomona (SR-60) Freeway. The plant was originally constructed for the purpose of demonstrating the feasibility of large-scale water reclamation. The original plant was placed in operation on July 26, 1962, and consisted of primary sedimentation and secondary treatment with activated sludge.
