The Valencia Water Reclamation Plant (WRP) currently provides primary, secondary, tertiary, and advanced treatment for a design capacity of 21.6 million gallons of wastewater per day (MGD) and serves a population of over 200,000 people. The Valencia WRP processes all wastewater solids generated in the Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District (i.e. from the Saugus and Valencia WRPs). The wastewater solids are anaerobically digested, stored, and then dewatered using filter presses. The dewatered cake, or biosolids, is hauled away for disposal at a landfill. Methane gas is produced during the digestion process and is utilized to generate steam to heat the digesters.

Water Reuse

History

The Valencia WRP occupies 27 acres west of the Golden State (I-5) Freeway. The treatment plant was placed in operation in 1967, and initially had a capacity of 1.5 million gallons per day (MGD) of secondary treatment. The construction of a 4.4-million-gallon flow equalization tank was completed in February 1995, followed by the completion of a solids handling expansion in August 2002. The construction of additional aeration tanks was completed in May 2003 for a final design capacity of 21.6 MGD. To comply with the chloride total maximum daily load (TMDL) limits, an ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system and an advanced water treatment facility (AWTF) were constructed in November 2018 and April 2019, respectively, with a start-up in July 2021 and October 2023, respectively.
