Approximately 12.6 MGD of recycled water is used at over 55 different sites. Recycled water is used for landscape irrigation and other municipal and industrial purposes in the City of Lancaster, and to maintain water levels at Apollo Lakes Regional Park and Piute Ponds. The remaining recycled water is used for irrigation of fodder crops.

The Lancaster WRP occupies 554 acres east of the Antelope Valley (CA SR-14) Freeway. The plant was placed in operation on September 24, 1959. It replaced a previous plant, which was located on Avenue H between 20th and 30th Streets West. This previous plant began operation on December 2, 1941. The plant’s capacity was expanded to 8 MGD in 1989, with 460 million gallons (1,400 AF) of storage ponds to capture excess winter flows. The Stage III expansion increased plant capacity to 10 MGD in December 1992. The Stage IV expansion, consisting of a flow equalization basin, two sedimentation tanks, and additional aeration equipment in the oxidation ponds, increased the plant’s secondary treatment capacity to 16 MGD in May 1997. The Lancaster WRP completed its conversion to full tertiary treatment in mid-2012 with a capacity of 18 MGD.
