Acceptable Alternatives to Automatic Water Softeners

Any household water treatment system that does not require the addition of salt (sodium chloride or potassium chloride) is acceptable for use in the Santa Clarita Valley, including the following commonly used technologies.  Some systems may use a combination of technologies or a multistage system. This list is not comprehensive of all acceptable alternatives, and the Sanitation District does not endorse any specific system.

 

Activated Carbon Adsorption, Filtration Carbon Filtration: The technology improves taste and odor by removing chlorine and organic compounds.
Technology: Activated Carbon Adsorption, Filtration
Maintenance Requirements: Filter media needs replacement every 2 to 3 years. Cost unknown.

Portable Exchange Tank Softening

Portable Exchange Tank Water Softeners: Similar to automatic water softeners, these remove hardness (calcium and magnesium) using ion exchange to prevent scale buildup and improve soap efficiency.  Instead of automatically regenerating the resin tank onsite, this salt-free water softening system is service-based, where a professional technician periodically replaces an exhausted resin tank with a freshly regenerated one.

Maintenance Requirements: Tanks must be changed every 2 to 4 weeks.

Activated Carbon Adsorption, Filtration, Reverse Osmosis, Ozonation Reverse Osmosis (RO): Often considered the most comprehensive for drinking water, RO removes both dissolved minerals (hardness) and chemical contaminants (taste). RO systems are typically for point-of-use at a single location, such as a kitchen sink, for drinking and cooking.

Maintenance Requirements: Sediment filters need changing every 6 months. The reverse osmosis membrane needs changing every 3 to 5 years. The filter media needs changing every 4 to 6 years.
