Jefferson Elementary, Coast Christian, and Trinity Lutheran Named Finalists in Trash Free Lunch Challenge
4/23/2012 -  Rival schools Jefferson Elementary, Coast Christian, and Trinity Lutheran will compete next week, but not in the gym or on the field. Instead, next week's showdown will occur in the schools' cafeterias, where the three will vie to be named the winner of the County's first Trash-Free Lunch Challenge. The contest, created by environmental non-profit Grades of Green, and sponsored by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, teaches kids to reduce trash by using reusable lunch containers and by sorting compostable and recyclable materials.

Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District Chloride Compliance Facilities Planning Process
1/6/2012 -  To comply with Federal and State laws that protect the Santa Clara River, the Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District (Sanitation District) is preparing plans for public review on the environmentally sound and cost-effective methods for removing chloride from the treated wastewater that the Sanitation District discharges into the river from its treatment plants. This treated water does not meet the established legal limit for chloride, a type of salt.

Due to strict federal and state requirements, the Sanitation District is required to meet the legal chloride limit by developing a plan to reduce the chloride content of the wastewater it discharges to the Santa Clara River from its two treatment plants, which treat sewage from the homes and businesses in the Santa Clarita Valley.  If the Sanitation District fails to do so, it will face very steep fines that could total hundreds of millions of dollars. In May 2011, the California Regional Water Quality Control Board for the Los Angeles Region (Water Quality Board) issued a Notice of Violation for both of these water treatment plants, including potential fines for every day that the Sanitation District is not in compliance with the legal chloride limit. Since our customers ultimately pay all of the Sanitation District’s costs, ratepayers would be responsible for paying these fines.

Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District Launches Water Quality Planning Process
12/7/2011 -  The Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District operates two wastewater treatment plants that serve the City of Santa Clarita and adjacent unincorporated areas. We will soon begin a new planning process and want to provide every opportunity for the public to be informed and provide input.

The treated water from the two wastewater plants is discharged to the Santa Clara River and must meet standards established by the Federal Clean Water Act and the State Water Code. These standards are, in turn, monitored and enforced by the California Regional Water Quality Control Board. One of those standards involves a type of salt called chloride.

The Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District must comply with the chloride standard. The first steps we must take are to prepare a Facilities Plan to evaluate the best options for complying with the chloride standard and prepare an Environmental Impact Report that identifies the environmental impacts of the options.

Opportunities for public input will be an important part of this planning process.

Chief Engineer and General Manager for Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County Announces Retirement

Whittier, California… Stephen R. Maguin, Chief Engineer and General Manager of the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, has announced his retirement effective early 2012.  Mr. Maguin is a 41-year employee of the Sanitation Districts who has served for the last 5 ½ years in the capacity of the Chief Engineer and General Manager.

 

The Sanitation Districts Board of Directors has appointed Grace R. Chan as the new Chief Engineer and General Manager upon Mr. Maguin’s retirement.  Ms. Chan is a    28-year employee of the Sanitation Districts who has served for the last 3 years in the capacity of Assistant Chief Engineer and Assistant General Manager.

Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District Enforcing Ban on Illegal Water Softeners
8/4/2011 -  Santa Clarita, CA - Today, the Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District mailed approximately 2,500 letters to residents suspected of having illegal automatic water softeners.  This targeted mailing is part of an enforcement program by the District to rid the community of banned automatic water softeners and to decrease the cost to the community of complying with State mandates through the Regional Water Quality Control Board for chloride (salt) in the District’s discharge to the Santa Clara River.
