Interesting Facts

Each person is responsible for creating approximately 7 pounds of solid waste and 100 gallons of wastewater each day.

The Whittier Narrows Water Reclamation Plant, built by the Sanitation Districts in 1962, was the first plant constructed in the U.S. to treat municipal wastewater for beneficial reuse via groundwater recharge. Today, the Sanitation Districts operate ten water reclamation plants that produce approximately 200 million gallons per day of water suitable for reuse.

The Puente Hills Landfill is the largest operating sanitary landfill in the United States (and probably the world). The site is also the largest recycling location in the United States, taking more than one million tons per year of recyclable materials such as tires, appliances, green materials, ash, and more.

The Sanitation Districts is the 20th largest electricity generator in the State of California at 133 megawatts, utilizing about half of that for its own operations.

The Rose Bowl, filled to the top, holds about 84 million gallons. If all of the Sanitation Districts' wastewater was diverted into the Rose Bowl, it would fill it to the top in about 3.8 hours. If we filled it with reclaimed water, it would fill in about 10 hours. If we filled it with Los Angeles County’s trash, it would take about 4 days to fill.

The Sanitation Districts has almost 5.3 million people on its system which means its population is larger than 29 of the states. Minnesota, Colorado and Alabama would follow it on the list. It's a larger population than the country of Ireland.

The Sanitation Districts has over 10,700 miles of sewers connecting to its system, almost 90% being the local lines owned by cities or the county. That would reach to New York and back four times, plus a round trip to San Francisco (including a side trip to the Napa Valley!).
