Environmental Control Systems Found to be Protective of Community
THE PALOS VERDES LANDFILL
The Palos Verdes Landfill accepted municipal waste and small quantities (3-4%) of hazardous waste during its operating life. The landfill was closed in 1980, and the environmental controls are operated by the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts. Parts of the completed landfill were developed into the South Coast Botanic Garden and the Ernie Howlett Park.
WHAT IS A FIVE-YEAR REVIEW?
The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) conducts a thorough review of the operations of the environmental control systems at the Palos Verdes Landfill approximately every five years. The recently completed review was a multi-year effort and included a complete evaluation of groundwater protection systems, landfill gas containment systems, and an updated health risk assessment, among other studies. In addition, the review incorporated numerous special studies to address community concerns.
FINDINGS OF THE FIVE-YEAR REVIEW
- The environmental control systems at the Palos Verdes Landfill are effective and protective of the surrounding community and the environment.
- Existing monitoring programs adequately assess containment facilities and remedial measures at the Palos Verdes Landfill.
- The Palos Verdes Landfill is well operated and maintained.
- The current recreational uses are appropriate for this Site.
